dsp system

During my time at the Institut für Nachrichtentechnik (IENT) of the Aachen University of Technology (RWTH Aachen), together with Jochen Kleber and Swen Müller I developed an universal DSP system, which is briefly described here.

This system is a computer-independent 19" unit that can be configured for many different purposes via MIDI (or RS232). Some of the projects realized up to present are a digital PA controller, a reverb-processor, an FIR filter and a synthesizer.

Connectors

  • 4 analog inputs and 8 analog outputs with 20 bit AD/DA converters
  • two digital AES/EBU digital stereo inputs and outputs
  • MIDI and RS232 interface

Signal processing

  • up to six 24bit Motorola DSPs, four of them freely available for audio processing (DSP56009)
  • flexible signal routing by means of a programmable matrix

Miscellaneous

  • DSP programs, data and complete menu trees uploadable via MIDI/RS232 into battery buffered RAM
  • operation via frontpanel, remote control and MIDI/RS232
  • 10 LED bargraphs for displaying signal levels or other processing data

The above picture shows a simplified block diagram of the DSP system. Only four of the six DSPs are shown here. The remaining two DSPs are directly associated to the DA converters and work as oversamplers.

For users and especially for programmers of software-projects for the DSP system an extensive documentation (in German) is available. Interested owners of one of the devices from our small run back then are welcome to contact me via email (see contact-page).

The DSP system is the result of a cooperation of the two institutes IENT and the ITA at the Aachen University of Technology (RWTH Aachen).
