music - collaborations

Lhanthan Strange Land Looking Back Looking Forward

There are two musicians with whom together I played around with our instruments and created some pieces of music in one of our home studios, especially between 1986 and 1992: Joachim Stein and Christian Köster. Some of the results of these co-operations are presented here.

Christian and I have created music for computer animated advertisement videos for two different assignments. For the first video soundtrack in 1988 our equipement was no more that one Korg M1, one Kawai K1 and a self-made mixer. At the time of the second video project our gear park had already grown significantly: a Korg DW-6000, a Kawai K1, an Ensoniq SQR, an E-Mu ProFormance, a Roland M12E rack mixer and a PC with Cakewalk 4.0 for DOS. The latter project resulted in a buch of short musical pieces of very different styles, among them were these:

Together with Joachim I spent countless hours on the computer and synthesizers, and often when we were in his homestudio he told me about how great his Cubase was, while when we met at my homestudio I told him about my favourite Cakewalk features (starting with 4.0 for DOS, later using the windows versions up to 6.01). Together we participated in the homerecording contest of the german Keyboards magazine - without sucess. Here you can listen to two of our songs, done around 1992:

In the year 1997 we decided to meet again for making music. We worked in my music room in Aachen for four days and hardly ever left the room during this time. Surprisingly, we succeeded in beeing "creative on command". This is the result:

The continuing arpeggio that can be heard across long passages of this song was one of the first occasions when my self-made MIDI arpeggiator worked as a kind of "inspiration machine".
