music - lhanthan

Back in the late eighties when I started writing a fantasy story I was sure that one day I would write a piece of music following that story. But I had no idea of how much effort a project like this would be. In the early 90s I started recording the first sketches into a sequencer, but I got stuck after composing about five minutes of music. In the autumn of '96, 9 years after starting to write the story, I started again from scratch. About one year of musical nights and weekends later my first CD was completed.

The result of all this work and fun is a musical narration of the fantasy story, pure instrumental and about 38 minuten long. All of the music is realized with electronic instruments. Most of the tracks were recorded in real-time (drum tracks play with drum pads) with only a small amount of editing. The complete story (in German) is reprinted in the 20 page booklet so that people who are fluent at reading German can read the story along with the music. The (now sold out) CD contains only one track, but for orientation when reading there are 33 index marks which are quoted in the text. For listeners whos CD player doesn't display the index numbers there is a table of all index numbers with the corresponding times at the end of the booklet.

Since April 2021, Lhanthan is finally also available online - for streaming on Apple Music, Spotify, Deezer, and Tidal as well as for purchase in the iTunes Music Store: Lhanthan on Apple Music and iTunes. Unfortunately my distributor does not support iTunes Digital Booklet, but those interested are welcome to contact me and I will send the booklet including the full story as PDF.

Given that my pool of instruments nowadays offers some better simulations of acoustic instruments like Piano or Drums, I sometimes thought of re-recording Lhanthan. But then again this recording will always be the original one, and I should perhaps rather spent my precious spare time creating new music.

Most of the mp3 extracts available on this page have durations from 0:45 to 1:30 minutes, resulting in file sizes of 1MB to 2MB using 160kbit/s encoding.

By the way, the staff in the background of these pages shows the notes of one of the main piano themes in "Lhanthan" (but for playing one has got to add three "#").
